We started this series with what professional life and business coaching is, and continued last week by breaking down some common misconceptions about coaching in what coaching is not, and today we get to look at the best part: why coaching works.
It’s shocking the ways we come up with to avoid taking steps to make a change, institute a new habit, or overcome an obstacle blocking us from where we want to go in life, don’t you think? It’s almost as if we want to keep success just out of our own reach and keep on doing (or not doing) the very things we know are getting in our way. We want to stop, to make a change, but more often than not, we hang onto the same familiar habits, behaviors, and limiting mindsets that prevent us from moving forward like a child’s favorite blankie. I don’t think we’re even aware we’re doing it most of the the time.
After all, it’s human nature. All you have to do is look around in the month of January to see how much people want help with weight loss and fitness–it’s a multi-billion dollar industry. The number of books written on just the topic of happiness is staggering. People are desperate to figure out how they can get happy! Let’s not even get started on how many books have been written (and sold) on the topic of success.
Most of us have struggled with limiting mindsets or beliefs that keep us in a state of fear and prevent us from taking steps to reach our full potential. These are exactly the reasons personal and professional coaching makes such a difference.
Coaching Works Because a Good Coach:
…gives an objective perspective that helps clients identify what’s lacking in life or business (or both), so they can take proactive steps to correct the situation.
…holds clients accountable to their co-created action steps to help them move toward their goals. A good life coach isn’t afraid to give a push when needed. Just like a skilled athletic coach, a personal, business or leadership coach will help bring the best out in their clients. He or she is going to encourage the actions that will lead to the results their client wants.
…helps clients recognize what they’re doing, not doing, thinking, or not thinking that’s getting in their own way, and then helps them devise a strategy to stop, start and go a better way.
…holds their clients vision in front of them and helps them achieve results and overcome obstacles more quickly than they would otherwise. In most cases, a good coach has already been where their clients want to go, and can help them navigate through change much faster as a result (saving both time and money).
…enables clients to find new ways of looking at things, so they can envision how things can look in their life once they reach their goals. Coaches make it a fun and exciting process because their helping their clients move in a positive direction (and help them get back on track when they veer off).
…provides the kind of ongoing support in reaching personal and professional goals that’s rare in personal relationships. A professional coach is someone hired to help clients see something all the way through, and they have a vested interest in helping them succeed. Clients get undivided attention every time they meet with their coach, and their coach really listens to what they have to say–this is pretty uncommon in most of our personal relationships. On top of that, our friends and family members have their own issues, obstacles, mindsets, dreams and goals to think about. In most cases we wouldn’t want our relationships to be burdened with needs a client has in a coach-client relationship–and it wouldn’t be sustainable or fair anyway.
…continually gives their clients feedback and helps them learn about themselves in ways they wouldn’t otherwise. Most of our friends and family members have pretty biased, or at least filtered, opinions about us (combined with expectations). This makes it difficult to get the unbiased clarity we need to grow into the best possible version of ourselves.
…fosters momentum. Positive change leads to increased confidence that leads to more and more positive change. As coaches help their clients clear the path of debris that gets in the way of making progress, they begin reaching their goals and suddenly the possibilities for their future expand because they’ve gained the confidence they need to reach for the next higher thing. The momentum coaches help their clients sustain is exactly why already successful people in life and business often hire coaches when they want to reach new goals.
…cheers their clients on when the going gets tough, believes in them when they struggle to believe in themselves, and celebrates their victories with them. The relationship a person forms with their coach will be like no other because he or she will have been there, listening, supporting, encouraging, and sometimes pushing to help clients achieve their potential. The client’s victories are just as exciting to their coach as they are to them!
I’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing people. Most of them are individuals you wouldn’t think need a coach–but that’s just it–we can all benefit from coaching when it comes to reaching our goals, improving ourselves, and overcoming obstacles. The progress people make with coaching is why I do this, along with the knowledge that the coaching I’ve received myself has helped me make progress I would not have made on my own. Nearly any highly successful person you talk to will more than likely tell you they’ve hired a coach to help them get where they are–and an many will tell you they continue to work with a coach even though they’re successful in their business, career, and life. Why? Because coaching works!
